LIMBAC 2025 : Lisbon Microalgae 5TH Advanced Course

LiMBAC is an intensive, hands-on training programme led by our partner A4F, guiding participants through the full microalgae production chain, from laboratory methods to large-scale industrial biomass cultivation. During this one-week course held in October 2025, a dedicated half-day session was organised around the CIRCALGAE project.

During this session, CIRCALGAE partners introduced the project and its algae biorefinery concept, presenting both microalgae and macroalgae processing pathways. They highlighted the functional properties of algae, the different valorisation strategies, and the key steps required to validate new algae-based ingredients for market applications.

The second part of the workshop was highly interactive. It began with a short survey to assess participants’ knowledge, perceptions and potential misconceptions about algae-based products and side-stream valorisation. Participants were then divided into smaller groups and invited to analyse selected articles on algae integration in food and cosmetic products, as well as on circularity and side-stream reuse.

This activity aimed to help students quickly familiarise themselves with the topic, process diverse information, engage in debate, and present their conclusions to the wider group. It served as an introductory step to raise awareness of the breadth of the subject and to emphasise the crucial role of consumer acceptance in supporting the growth of the algae sector.

Beyond the technical skills acquired in microalgae production throughout the week, this workshop encouraged participants to take a broader perspective, considering societal perceptions and the importance of public acceptance in advancing sustainable and circular algae-based value chains.
