Policy Brief and recommendations on sustainable algae biorefinery

Developing sustainable biorefineries, for the valorization of industrial algae waste streams and co-products, also implies to ensure their integration into an adequate societal, environmental, economic and regulatory context.

CIRCALGAE partners CEVA, Aquimer and Chalmers prepared a Policy Brief on sustainable algae biorefineries, outlining the current landscape of the European algae sector, detailing its challenges and opportunities, and preparing recommendations.

It outlines significant action points geared toward establishing a thriving sector. Scaling up algae cultivation and use of co-products, addressing regulatory challenges through proactive policies, promoting public awareness and education, boosting ongoing research and development, and facilitating local cooperations and industrial investment, are all key actions necessary to propel the algae industry forward in alignment with the principles of sustainability and a circular economy. The insights and highlights serve to remind stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers of the interconnection of these goals and the collaborative effort required to realize the full potential of algae across diverse industries.
