CIRCALGAE brings algae innovation to the European Parliament
Last week, the CIRCALGAE consortium had the opportunity to present its vision and achievements at the European Parliament in Brussels during a dedicated session on the future of algae-based innovation.
The event brought together Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission and researchers from within the Project to discuss the strategic role of algae in supporting Europe’s green transition. The session highlighted how algae-based biorefineries and innovative bio-based products can strengthen the circular economy, improve resource efficiency and contribute to more sustainable blue value chains.
Beyond presenting the project’s latest results, the event was an opportunity to raise awareness among European policymakers about the importance of investing in algae innovation and creating a supportive policy framework that enables these solutions to reach the market and contribute to Europe’s sustainability objectives.
CIRCALGAE warmly thanks MEP Eric Sargiacomo and the S&D Group in the European Parliament for hosting this event. We also extend our sincere thanks to the EPP Group and MEP Carmen Crespo Díaz for their support and engagement. Although she was unfortunately unable to attend at the last minute, we greatly appreciated her willingness to contribute to the discussion.
We also thank the representatives of the European Commission, including REA, DG RTD and DG MARE, for their continued support and valuable participation.
A special thank you goes to all CIRCALGAE partners who contributed to the success of this session, including CEVA, Safe Food Advocacy Europe, CEAMSA, PÔLE AQUIMER, CSIC and Chalmers University of Technology. Through collaboration between research, industry and policymakers, CIRCALGAE continues to demonstrate the potential of algae as a strategic resource for building a more circular, resilient and sustainable Europe.
The discussions held at the European Parliament once again demonstrated the importance of strengthening dialogue between research and policymaking to unlock the full potential of algae-based innovation across Europe.
